I’ll give you the best of care if you’ll only get to know and trust me. Call me and I’ll answer, be at your side in bad times; I’ll rescue you, then throw you a party. I’ll give you a long life, give you a long drink of salvation!”. For dear life definition: 1. If you do something for dear life, you do it with as much effort as possible, usually to avoid.

Think on it:
Have you ever walked outside when there is a storm going on, and it was all you could do to hang on to your coat and your umbrella so they would not be snatched away? The strongest wind I remember encountering was when I lived in Hawaii. There was a mountain pass on the island of Oahu called the Nuuanu Pali Lookout. We would often take visitors there because of the beautiful scenery. However, the winds that blew through the pass were incredibly strong. We would often hold on to one another because the force of the winds made you feel as if you would be swept away if you didn’t. I have fond memories of locking arms with our friends and clinging to one another, all the while laughing through the sheer exhilaration of the experience. I’m not so sure facing that wind by myself would have been so much fun.
The winds of life tend to do the same things to us. They whip around us, threatening to take the feet out from under us. Just like the wind at the Pali, there is nothing we can do to stop what is coming at us. All alone it is a scary thing, and it is all we can do to just stand there and not be knocked around. This is not how God intends for us to face the winds of this life, however. He wants us to press forward – but with such strong forces coming at us, this can seem impossible. The thing is, we are not alone in this. Just like I was able to hold on to my family and friends up at the Pali, we are able to cling to God. This is how God wants us to walk through our life. I love how Deuteronomy 13:4 is worded in the Message:
“You are to follow only God, your God, hold Him in deep reverence, keep His commandments, listen obediently to what He says, serve Him – hold on to Him for dear life!”
I love the visual image this verse puts in my head. I imagine myself facing whatever comes my way and holding on, clinging tightly to God. Now, practically speaking, how do we do this? This verse tells us to do the following five things:
- Follow only God – that means we are not to let anything else distract us from Him – keep our eyes on Him and Him alone.
- Hold God in deep reverence – when you revere something, you hold it as most precious. You think about it all the time and can’t imagine life without it. Is that how you feel about God and your relationship with Him?
- Keep God’s commandments – these are there to keep us safe and to guide us. Many times we act as if His commands are barriers to our “happiness” and are optional. Keeping them allows us to hold on to Him.
- Listen obediently to what God says – this is not just listening, it is listening with the intent to obey. There is a big difference between the two. Listening with the intent to obey means you will be taking action. Just listening, means you are leaving your options for disobedience open. See the difference?
- Serve God – in whatever you do, do it for God. It doesn’t matter what people think, it matters what God thinks. Spend your energy doing things for Him, things that count for eternity, rather than for earthly things.
This holding on to God is a daily, an hourly, a minute-to-minute thing. All it takes to be swept away by the winds of adversity is for us to let go for a moment. I love the song, “I Need Thee Every Hour.” It is a wonderful reminder that I need to hold on to Him for dear life! Enjoy this version of this wonder hymn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-LkUTjYSUs.
Pray about it:
Father, I want to hold on to You for dear life. Sometimes that holding on will be when I am afraid and desperate, and sometimes that holding on will be out of sheer joy of being close to you. Whatever the reason, remind me to hold on at all times and never let go! Amen.
Act on it:
- Which of the five things mentioned in the devotional do you see yourself needing most? This week, make a plan to work on focusing on that one thing. Find some verses that will serve as good reminders, think of practical things you can do to follow what that is telling you to do, ask a good friend to hold you accountable.
Parenting Tips:
- When life comes at your child pretty hard, teach them about clinging and holding on to God for their life. Yes, they have you as their parents, but they also need to learn to cling to God – this is the life lesson you can help them learn at a young age.
